Hey all,
I'm bored now, I dont want to sleep, So I figured i'd create a thread to give me a little more insight into the people that visit AnimePhilia every now and then by asking them about favourite TV shows, so for this edition, Star Trek! A cultural phenomenon to say the least
What is your favourite series? Why? Who're your favourite characters and why? You get the idea..

My favourite series is Deep Space Nine, Simply because of three reasons
1) The war with the dominion
2) They dont go out looking for trouble
3) The Defiant <-- nuff said

1) The War with the Dominion was immense, as much as sometimes the CGI/Modeling sucked a little and the acting for the Changlings were a little... screwy the entire war just seamed to kick ass, with DS9 being retaken and the massive fleet of 100+ star fleet ships that actually made my body temperature drop by three degrees and my skin turn white as snow. Yes it was that awesome (see screenshot).

2) DS9 just sits there not doing much, and suddenly a massive attack comes in and they just own everything! They're the first line of defence against the dominion and they take all the fire!

3) The best ship in the entire starfleet arsenal. Officially a transport ship, unofficially a war ship, it's so powerful that if it put all power into it's own engines it'd rip itself apart. I could rabble on for hours as to why I love this ship, but I wont because it'd bore you all.

Also, Sisko is an awesome Commander! He plays the role perfectly!

So, what about you guys? What do you like?

Each of the diferent series has its own good and bad points and the off shoots of series and the movies... I likes each of the series in their own right equally ... I do remember the " StarTrek" (66-69-) when it was a weekly show along with "Lost in Space" (65-68-) which was a for runner to Star Trek. and the Older show I knew as Jett Jackson in reruns in the early 60's but was "Captain Midnight" from the mid 50's...

Bill Shatner recently hosted a show about all the new scientific devices that were just dreams in the 60's but became reality in the coming decades... to include the fact he and (Lt. Uhura) Nichelle Nichols had the first in screen inter-racial kiss, ever
The show also pointed all the changes in computers and the Hi-tech world and the Race relations... and the use of Peaceful exploration with the ability to still defend your self was not a bad thing.
The Original series was more than 20 years ahead of it time... Gene Roddenberry was a visionary ... and an inspiration to 3 generations of dreamers looking to the Stars, and to the Futures we have there, and getting there.....

Sorry... I did not mean to get wrapped around the plasma drive...

Agreed, the series was years ahead of it's time, also the technology was a little off but not that far! Yet, some things in DS9 and Voyager (based on later stardates) seam to be more lacking then the technology we have today.

For example, when they're playing around with their Com badges in that horrible monotone sound, why not just take out an iPhone? LMAO

I will give better examples one day,... oh wait. here we go. Why cant the computer compensate for most of the basic dialitium mixture problems? Saves having an entire enginearing team there to press three buttons...

Also, remember the episode of The Next Generation when one of the screens in the background went into a BSOD? LMAO.
Then notice how from that episode onwards you notice little things that hint that they've stoped using Windows to emulate the LCARS interface and have acutally started using a Mac! LOLOLOL +1 for apple. OS X StarShip edition

Oh, another example
*Computer Play audio file Gammer 12*
why not do what I do
*Mac, open iTunes and play Slipknot wait and bleed*
Yes, I can talk to my Mac

I've seen a car commercial recently where the driver was able to verbally request the track he wanted to hear... and his buddy requested something embarrassing from his library.

Back on topic, I've been a fan of TNG for a long while. I think Voyager was good in it's own way, but it got out of hand at times with ludicrous concepts. I never gave Enterprise much of a chance originally, but now that Sci-Fi channel is re-running them I've acquired a new respect for the series.

Recently I read that Enterprise gave a basic explaination of why OTS Klingons had flat foreheads... I think the franchise is taking itself a little too seriously now.

Well, now i'm going to sound like a real nerd :'(

In DS nine the crew of the defiant go back to TOS timeframe and meet some Klingons with flat heads, Worf explains that this timeframe was not a good one for his species

In Enterprise the crew find that the klingons have been experimenting with combining Human and Klingon DNS to make super soldiers, one side effect is a flat head.

So it's logical to assume that the effects didnt ware out for at least another 200 years, TNG timeframe :P

I actually stubled across this information by accident recently. I guess what I meant was that until Worf made his comment in the DS9 episode it sparked controversy with the fans. Until this episode, people just took the flat-headed klingons (who speak klingonese in that episode  ) as poor makeup with a bad budget. But once Worf declared that he couldn't talk about it and that no one else recognized the "flat" klingons, the fans wanted to know what was going on. Enterprise came in with the explaination. But was Worf's comment neccessary? Did fans need a story explaination for the flat klingons? And why was every klingon encountered in OTS a flat?

Now, Star Trek isn't my forte'. Star Wars is my thing... >:)

Seems like people are getting off track here. Analizing episodes and coonditions without saying which series they liked best. Assuming that they are fans of any part of Star Trek. I used to have a science fiction fan club that ran a Star Trek survey. Not only asked which series was favorite, but also asked which character and episode of each series was a favorite. I also covered the books too. Wish I'd kept the results. Would have been interesting to post them here. Of course this was before Enterprise came on the scene.

Star Wars was A long, long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away...

Star Trek was here... in ours...

Asphyxia8489
11-26-2007, 03:52 PM
Well, if it was in a different Galaxy then the chances of them all being Carbon based are pretty slim, by that far out you'd get some variation, Take Stargate with the Goa'uld for example

Theareen

Interesting you posted pics of Zhaan from Farscape while the "carbon based" arguement is going on. Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan is a Delvian, basically a plant species despite looking anthropomorphic like humans. AND she's a twelveth level priestess! I actually have a copy of the third pic there (first one of Zhaan) signed by Virginia Hey.

Back on topic, I think Enterprise has gone out of their way for the serious fans to be true to the series canon but at the price of a wider audience. I still prefer Star Wars, but Farscape was an excellent series as well.

Strangers From The Sky - the real story behind the first meeting between Vulcans and Humans.
Crossover. Next Gen novel that includes the McCoy, Scott and Spock of the TNG era.
For the art fan. The Strangers cover was originally 2-parter with the inner cover being a piece by Boris Vallejo.

Anyone run across Star Trek transsexual art? Rereading all this reminded me of one picture I'd seen, but can't find again. Had Hoshii sporting a huge cock and performing a deep tissue massage on T'Pol's butt.

Visit the dtiberius site. Saw a great picture of Dr. Beverly Crusher giving Deanna Troi a deep tissue massage. DS9 could do with one featuring Kira Nerys and Jadzia Dax. Voyager getting it done with the Capt. & Torres. Original series would be Uhura and Rand for me though I wouldn't mind a triple play with Chapel in the mix.

I used to watch Next Gen when I was a kid, but, seeing them again recently, they don't hold up very well. The early episodes look really, really cheap (and Wesley is one of the worst characters ever created).

DS9 was great. The characters were much more interesting and they actually had some continuing storylines.

I tried watching Voyager and Enterprise, but gave up on them pretty quickly. I did catch the finale of Enterprise. Wow. I've never seen producers of a show actually go out of their way to show that they hate the fans. It was probably the worst series ending I've ever seen.

Looking back on the Star Trek it does look cheep...
but the budget was not all that great to start with...
and when they started the show on 08 Septembe 1966. the Gemini Space Missions were still underway (Gemini XI lifted off 12 September 1966)... the last Star Trek show on 03 June 1969. It aired 6 weeks before Neil Armstrong first, set foot on the moon. (July 20 1969).

IF you have a chance to see the History Channel "Show How Star trek Changed the World" ya' can see the reasons of the cheep-ness and the reality they were looking in to the future to see... The hand held "tricorders" were portable tape players and the scanning devices were salt shakers... we now have palm pilots and Black berries... In 1966 you could beat some one to death with a telephone receiver and now we have the "Flip-top" cell phones that resemble the communicators the Crew used...

There is the same difference in the special effects in Movies of today and the 60's, the technology has made massive difference ... for its time Star Trek was fantastic... I was there and remember it... another one thats not shown as much except on the Sci-Fi Channel was "Lost In Space"... it aired in 1965 and was just as visionary ...

Original Series all the way. It was groundbreaking for its time. Extremely influential.

I grew up on TNG and its long been near and dear to my heart but seeing it now it does lose its luster.

DS9 I think is okay in its own way but it is so different it really shouldn't be called Star Trek at all.

Everything else is just wretched.

I'll pick Voyager too. Best relations acting in a trek series so far. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, even though the TNG cast was supposed to be a family and all. DS9 I never liked for some reason. Boring commander and too much of doing absolutely nothing on a space station.

I don't really like Star Trek as nearly everystory has some sort of Moral beneath it.

I did vote for the Original Series, as it does feature Leonard Nimoy, who's character of Spock, I wouyld adpt in my personality.

As for the rest, I've watch Bit and peices of STTNG, DS9 & Voyager and the complete run of Enterprise.

If there was a poll for best epsiode, that would be even harder to do as each series has some really good ones and some really rotten ones.

Reading through the answers, reminded me of a poll I composed while running a science fiction fan club. A number of questions about Star Trek, but also a number of questions about science fiction in general. So long ago that it dealt only with TOS and TNG. DS9 & Voyager didn't even exist. Any way to update the questions and republish the poll here?

My fave DS9 episode would have to be Blood Oath.

Star Trek purists - get a life! The new movie opens up so many possibilities to revive a rather tired franchise. So they changed things? Ever think maybe they were setting us up for a time travel film like ST4? Go back and fix things so Romulus doesn't get fried which means Nero doesn't kill Kirk's dad or the entire planet of Vulcan.
