I've had a similar experience to the original poster. Sometimes when my back muscles are relaxed enough I can reach. The headboard on my bed has a ledge on top, and it helps if I put my feet on the underside to push against. I also have found that a pillow under my neck to prop my head at the correct angle helps alot too.
